The cork industry is generally regarded as environmentally friendly since the tree lives to be around 300 years old, and is never cut down to harvest the cork.  After the tree is old enough the outer bark and cork layers are stripped off the tree every 9 years, which allows for a very environmentally friendly substance to use in products as well as a healthy living forest that prevents desertification and creates a particular habitat for some endangered species.
